The access to the town is picturesque: double-arched bridge incorporated into the Scaliger Castle leads to the medieval part of the town on the tip of the peninsula. The castle was commissioned by the Della Scala family, perhaps by the same Mastino Della Scala, in 1250 and then rebuilt by the Venetians in the 15th century.
It is still in excellent condition and can be visited. From the keep one can enjoy the breathtaking view over the lake and the peninsula. The important Roman and Medieval ruins of Sirmione are the major destination of cultural tourism.
