On the tip of the peninsula in Sirmione stands the largest and most important Roman villa in Northern Italy, known as the "Grotte di Catullo." It was built between the first century BC and the first century AD by the rich and powerful Veronese family of the Valerii, probably as one of the residences of the famous Latin poet Catullus. The villa spreads over an area of almost 2 hectares, its impressive foundations are dug in the rock of the headland, the huge building on three levels has been partially ruined since the third century AD.
